My elderly little debit card has been feeling distinctly unwell this year, with more and more chip and pin readers refusing to recognise it. So the other week I went into Nationwide to order a new one.

Now, it used to be that when you ordered a new card they sent it out in the mail, but in yet another of those 'for your inconvenience and safety' gestures - this one ostensibly to combat card fraud - they are now dispatched by a third company. In Nationwide's case this is the epically inept Secure Mail Services, who also, woe woe woe, handle delivery of US visas in this country. Did Nationwide's cashiers ... sorry, customer service representatives attempt to inform me of this change? Did they bollocks!

SMS attempted to deliver the card to my flat on Monday - 10 days after I initially ordered it. Obviously, as I wasn't at home and SMS is one of those companies that utterly fails to appreciate that most people work during the working week, they couldn't deliver it, in which case the usual procedure is to slip a little calling card through the letter box. Did SMS do this? Nope.

They chose to inform me by snail mail.

Second class snail mail.

Four days later.

I've organised re-delivery to my office, and it should be tomorrow, and I've had a good yell at them, so I feel better, but I know for a fact UPS or ParcelForce would have given up and returned it as undeliverable by now, so I'm not holding out much hope of it being at my desk tomorrow. So heads up, LJ gang, and avoid SMS if you possibly can.

Just because it strikes a chord, and because I *had* to reply because I suddenly had flashbacks recently to really nice memories of rushing around Hyde Park with you a couple of years ago - the other month, I went into Abbey and mentioned my signature was almost scuffed off my card, and could I order a new one? I was directed to a man - who turned out to be a tosser - who did the stuff. There was a little gripe when at the end, I asked if it was being sent to the branch like before, coz of having light-fingered neighbours, and he said "No..." and grimaced, like amending the order would be about as easy as pulling that morning's breakfast back out via his bumhole. It turned out, a bit later, the stupid man had reported my card stolen and stopped it! There was a bit of a delay with the card arriving - and then it turned out it -had- been sent to the branch after all. Which tells me that Abbey are rrrrubbish, and I must do something about it soooon.

Ahem. Rant done. Respect due. Have a gorgeous weekend, Mister.

I have been unable to remotely access my work email! Please do send one to the non-work address if you replied to the work email else I won't read it til I get home...
