shinytoaster: (Oh bugger)

There is maybe an inch of settled snow outside. Probably our first significant fall since 2003. And true to form, just like in 2003, pretty much everything is suspended or delayed. Including both my tube lines. For an inch of snow. I mean, it's not unexpected, I suppose.

And the first person who says 'snow must mean no global warmingz zomg' will be shot. Right now I can hear the sound of them frantically jabbing the send button over the BBC's ever so balanced public forum, Chav Your Say.

Meanwhile I will just sit here and ponder whether it's worth going into work today, and sing my little song...

Oh just a sprinkling of powder makes the Underground go down,

**snortfle**

Having been to the snow all of twice in my entire life I can't really sympathise, apart from in a general raaah-public-transport kind of way.

Isn't it funny though how it's all "signal failures"? On like, 6 different lines? Maybe it should be "OMG, our signals are not equipped to deal with snow! They have holes!" instead...

My sympathies for public transport problems. Though I can't say I understand why underground would have problems with snow, since it's, well, under ground? Are the sections that aren't under ground guilty for jamming the whole system? As soon as train tracks are cleared here, trains are the most reliable transport while there's snow.
Am I to understand that it hasn't snowed in London since 2003? I guess I understand why they wouldn't be prepared for it well then. Though I think they don't start clearing the roads here until there's more than an inch of snow already :)
I love snow, but I've got yet to see a single snowflake this season, very unusual for here. They'd forecasted it for yesterday, but it rained the whole day...

I think something like two thirds or maybe three quarters of it isn't actually underground at all. It's definitely more than half but I'm not sure of the precise figure. Once you get out of the city centre it goes right out to the outer suburbs/countryside at some points, and London being the size it is that's a lot of track.

2003 is the last significant settled snowfall I remember, but we've had snowfalls and flurries since then, of course. January 1991 and January 1987 are the last times I can remember it being actually a deep snowfall.

Have Your Say is one of the BBC's best public services. By providing a space for all the terminally disaffected to vent, they keep them from cluttering up more interesting places.

According to the BBC there's 0.8cm of snow.

Which is somewhat less than everyone else thinks, including all the tubes, most of the roads, and a fair amount of the rail lines...

It was surprisingly easy for me to get to work today. But nearly frozen solid on arrival
