I can see the funkeh new control tower at Heathrow from the window by my desk. Usually when you look around there's a plane hurtling up in the sky and rattling the windows over in Slough, but today I've not seen a single flight leave.

Shitloads of helicopters, though.

Just sayin'

Are you sitting down?

[livejournal.com profile] apolla is on her way to the U.S. TODAY for my 29th birthday weekend. She is entangled in all that mess. *weeps* All I wanted was a b-day party...

I'm meant to be collecting boy from Heathrow next Friday, and we're flying to Spain the week after, I really hope this blows over by then.

Oh good lord ! Tell L I am thinking of him. My brother is meant to be flying back from Spain today.

I suspect things will have eased by the time you intend flying, but I should think you'll need to allow a lot of extra time and not carry any drinks.

Hey, we're hoping for the best. She made it through security, so late may she be, but here perhaps she will come (I can only guess what is going through her parents' heads right now).

I'm sure things will have blown over in a week.

While I am glad I missed all this by ten days, I only missed it by ten days.

I feel really weird, right now.

(I hope L gets there!)

As Tim Rice once wrote:
No, we wouldn't mind seeing her at Harrods.
But behind the jewelry counter, not in front.

Precisely what I would have been thinking, if I hadn't been dealing with stupid people at work.

Have you see the Vincente Minelli movie "The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse"? It's based on a 1920s Argentinian novel, in which Argentina is described as richer than the US, and slated to become the newt superpower. In 1900, I bet Harrods was catering to the latifundia-owning rich.

Nope. But given how economically successful Argentina was in the first part of the 20th Century, (not that it's a basket case now by any standards) it doesn't surprise me that down a different leg of the trousers of time it could have vied with the US.

The article I found the Harrods snippet in is here (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/4779479.stm) and it's interesting to see quite how completely the Falklands War poisoned our relationship with Argentina - when you consider the input Britain had - rightly or wrongly - into its development in the 1800s - railways, industrialisation, trade, immigration - there are still Welsh speaking communities in Patagonia to this day.

Actually, the windows don't rattle here in Slough

Or maybe the planes go by so often we don't even notice because it's a continuous rattle...

Planes are still going up, I've heard three so far.
