I was hoping I wouldn't have to explain the joke I made yesterday, but none of you ignorami seemed to get it. Einbahn Strasse means One Way Street, so logically there would be quite a lot of them and they wouldn't have been able to find their car.

God, I feel so dirty. Comment now I've explained it, please? Validate me?

. . . I feel so stupid for not thinking to translate that. My German's terribly poor, but not that terribly poor--now that I know that Einbahn Strasse is not just a lovely street name, your post was hilarious. =)

Yeah, I got it. Something similar happened to my oldest sister when she first moved to Germany in 1969 and I remembered her story. If it had been some German I didn't recognize I'd have just put it through Babelfish. (Perhaps adding a footnote saying, "Babelfish is your friend!" would help on posts with untranslated non-English.)

*pipes up from the cheap seats* I thought it was funny, and was pleased that my high-school German hadn't gone completely to waste. The poor hooligans! :p

"but none of you ignorami seemed to get it."

You have Germans on your list you comment whore you, I think it's safe to say that at least a few did :P

Plus me and my amazing German GCSE, in which I learnt basic conversational skills (mostly pointing and speaking English slowly) and that if someone mentioned the Berlin Wall in class we could put our books away and daydream because the tutor would be irrevocably distracted for the rest of the period.

And, apparently, the meaning of Einbahn Strasse. Although I admit I'd have spelt it with a funky B.

I didn't quite get it when I read it. I had to ask my mother to translate - she knows some German. I thought the sign said "No parking."

And I suck at commenting. Sorry.
