Ended up getting:
Local Hero
Withnail & I
Lost in La Mancha
Withnail & I I got for my brother for Christmas, actually, but it was knocked down to £2.99 in the HMV sale so it was really hard to resist. Lost in La Mancha is the documentary film about the unmaking of Terry Gilliam's Don Quixote flick, and also has Johnny Depp in it. That was also knocked down to an absurdly low price, so I'll get back to you on how that one goes. Local Hero is probably one of my favourite films, has a cracking soundtrack (if you like Mark Knopfler, which I do) and I've been hankering after owning it ever since it was reissued on DVD last year.
I've noticed HMV has a tendency to overstock cult films like Withnail & I and then, months later, when management realises they've sold about all the copies they're going to sell, the price drops to something crazy and ridiculous. Exactly the same thing happened to Donnie Darko a few years ago; all the big stores here, from HMV to Virgin to Borders, insanely overordered it. It was going for about 50p in Borders at one point.
Still, got three films on a 15 pound gift voucher, so that's pretty cool.
Have also decided am going to make like several other folks on the FL and keep track of all the movies I see this year. I fancied doing it for '05, but it was too late, so this would seem like the perfect opportunity to start. Expect further updates on this one throughout the year.
The Usual Suspects
Took me some time to get around to watching this one, and I'm honestly not sure how I'm feeling about it, mainly because I had to concentrate so hard on it that I think I missed a bunch of leading stuff. So, while I really liked it, I won't go crazy over it, but I think it will stand up to a repeat viewing or six. Kevin Spacey was great, obviously.
Kill Bill 2
Another one that I should have seen much sooner. I actually once dreamed the opening to it -
aegeus and I were driving round a parking lot in the Pussy Wagon, and then there was this whole shoot-out, and I think I actually died. Well, the Pussy Wagon was absent from KB2, but not conspicuously so, and of course the whole set up was visually stunning. Great characters, convoluted out-of-time Tarantino plot, disturbing bits, funny bits, and more of that comic book violence. This is a faultless movie.
