My great-grandmother made them every Christmas. She was a hell of a cook, and it's the only thing she ever made that I refused to eat. It strikes me now, then, as something of a grownup food, because none of the other kids ate them either, and I wish she'd lived long enough for me to have one as an adult and see if my tastes changed.
